Space Probe Information:
Space Probe Links - Human space flight may be thrilling, as well as necessary to accomplish some missions, but for reconnaissance and massive data gathering, space probes are indispensable. These relatively small, often quirky-looking, platforms have repaid their cost many times over with extremely valuable information about the solar system in which we live. The list below is a small sampling, representing the most recent and planned probes to major neighboring bodies.

SMART-1 Lunar Probe
SMART-1 will test miniaturisation technology while exploring the Moon from orbit. It is the first space probe ESA has ever sent to the Moon and it also is the first of ESA's missions to test advanced technology needed for future scientific planetary missions.

Planetary probes have a specific mission: to explore the surface or vicinity of a planet in the Solar System. Not surprisingly, Mars remains the most popular target. Other deep space probes explore the Sun, other planets, or are on their way out of the Solar System.

Cassini-Huygens Home
The Cassini-Huygens Mission to the Saturnian system is a multinational cooperation between three space agencies and 17 nations. Starting in 2004, the spacecraft will explore Saturn, its mysterious rings and its many moons. The Cassini spacecraft will orbit the ringed planet for four years. The Huygens probe will dive into the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn's biggest moon.

Mars Express - Mars Probe
Mars Express, so called because of the rapid and streamlined development time, represents ESA's first visit to another planet in the Solar System. Borrowing technology from the failed Mars 96 mission and ESA's Rosetta mission, Mars Express will help answer fundamental questions about the geology, atmosphere, surface environment, history of water and potential for life on Mars.

New Horizons Mission
The New Horizons spacecraft will cross the entire span of the solar system and conduct flyby studies of Pluto and Charon in 2015. The seven science instruments on the piano-sized probe will shed light on the bodies' surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres.
